When I started photography, I declared I never wanted to be a portrait photographer. “Weddings are my thing” I used to say. I guess I had no children of my own at the time – and didn’t fancy studio work too much.
8 years on, that statement is a little ironic given the trophies sitting here on my desk! Thing is, I’m really enjoying doing portraiture! You get to meet such a wide range of interesting people. It’s almost like speed dating (without the romance) – you get introduced to people for a short time, have a laugh with them then we part company. It’s fun,relaxed. So there you go, I’m now also a portrait photographer and I love it!
I also realise I don’t blog many portraits. I guess its more difficult to get permission etc with kids, but I’ll try to post a few more. Today let me introduce you to Tiernan and Odhrin. Two of the coolest little dudes. Was delighted that there mum wanted something a wee bit different!

I always knew having a studio in an industrial estate would be handy. Red shutters!
For the last 2 months we have had road works right outside our door. They’ve gone now, but I’m told they are returning…
Anyway, I was determined to do something with all the signs etc – but just never got round to it. Tiernan gladly obliged . This photo is the only good thing to come of weeks of cleaning dust out of this studio!

Well the studio is in full swing now (and I haven’t got round to having the official opening – but I’m holding off until I get a nice big sign out the front!)…I also managed to do my weekly house sitting last week which went really well – wonder who will be next!
Anyway, last week I took some pictures of little Kaylee. She’s very cute – here are some of the photos! I’m kinda getting into a style for my studio work. I find a lot of studio work very flat, so I’ve tried to mix studio lighting with some nice depth of field…Kaylee’s mum was happy
to ditch the white backdrop for something a bit more low key – you can let me know what you think!

Having the new studio is great – so you might think it a bit strange to want to do more environmental portraiture…well its great to get out and about – into people’s homes or local play-parks – and to get pictures of life as it happens…
So I’m going to be doing one ‘on location’ shoot per week…can’t post all of them on the blog – but here’s an interesting one…
I get told that I don’t take enough pictures of my own kids – so yesterday I had 5minutes (and it literally was 5mins) to take some pictures in my (very messy) front room. Out came my new lens of choice for this stuff- a 50mm 1.4 prime. And here’s the results:
