Brooch Beauty – Part 1

Over the last year, I’ve noticed more and more people going for alternatives to real flowers. One particular trend is for Brooch Bouquets – these glorious creations made from brooches and various other ornaments. A recent poll on our Facebook page showed that opinion is divided on these creations – they might not be for every taste but I rather like them!

So where do you get these in N.Ireland? Well over the next few weeks I’m going to catch up with two NI based companies that have come recommended to me.

This week, it’s the turn of Joy Saunderson who is based in Ballymena.

Hello Joy! Why do people choose brooch bouquets?

People choose brooch bouquets for different reasons. Maybe they are allergic to flowers/pollen, going abroad to be married or wanting something unique. They will last for ever and could become a family tradition or heirloom. Personal brooches of sentimental value can be included.

Great – they look expensive!

Seasonal weather won’t effect price and there no last minute panic for delivery or collection. From Roscommon to Rome they travel well. The bride can view the bouquet as it progresses so they know they will be totally happy with the completed piece.

Prices start at £15 for a gents buttonhole or small girl’s wand up to £300 for a totally “bling” bouquet (and lots of prices in between). They can be mixed with fabric flowers, which make it less expensive and also lighter to carry.

Oh I like a bit of bling!

I wouldn’t have put you down as a bling guy

Well there you go. Right enough about me – what range of stuff do you sell?

You can have just the brides bouquet or total bridal party – bride’s (shower or round), bridesmaid, flower girl (mini posy or wand), gents buttonhole, mothers corsage for bag, dress or wrist, hair combs, cake topper and pew ends all to complement a theme.

Jepers – the full works. Do they have to be all brooches?

You can choose from a variety of materials- brooches, buttons, chiffon, crystals, diamante, feathers, paper, pearls, organza, ribbon, satin, velvet, wire. Any colour scheme is possible.
Each brooch or individual item is created, wired, taped and securely bound together which is time consuming. My bouquets are not glued onto a base, which can result in a rather flat one dimensional top.

Sounds like a lot of work. You were saying earlier that they last a lifetime…

If not displayed under glass after the wedding, a quick blast with the hair drier should clear the dust and cobwebs! Then they will last forever.

Thanks to Joy for answering my questions – check out her website at http://www.joysaunderson.co.uk for a few samples of what’s available.
