Are you preparing for a family portrait session? Congratulations on taking the first step to capturing the love and connection within your family! As a photographer, I’ve worked with numerous families, and I’m excited to share with you what to expect during your session.

Before the Session
Before we dive into what happens during the session, let’s cover a few things to keep in mind beforehand:
Schedule
Plan to arrive on time – this will give us time to get settled, and you can use the bathroom and get comfortable.
Clothing
Dress in comfortable, coordinating outfits that reflect your family’s personal style. Avoid busy patterns, bright colours, and anything too casual (e.g., ripped jeans, flip-flops). Stick to neutral tones or complementary colours that will blend well with each other and the background. You can check out our dress for success guide here.
Hair and Makeup
Keep your hair simple and styled as you normally would. For makeup, aim for a natural look that enhances your features without looking too done-up.
During the Session
Now, let’s talk about what happens during the session:
Introduction and Warm-Up
We’ll start with a brief introduction, and I’ll explain the plan for the session. We’ll take a few minutes to get comfortable with each other and the surroundings. If you have a dog, we’ll let them run around for a few minutes.

We can be flexible, but we usually begin with family portraits, focusing on capturing the love and connection between you and your loved ones. Younger children and pets will be most comfortable on your knee – so its a great place to start. I’ll guide you through poses, expressions, and interactions to ensure we get the best possible shots.
Individual Portraits
Next, we’ll take individual portraits of each family member. This is a great chance to capture some beautiful, candid shots of each person, especially the kids.

Playtime and Interaction
As we continue, we’ll incorporate playtime and interaction into the session. This might involve games, activities, or simply hanging out and being ourselves. The goal is to capture genuine, heartfelt moments that reflect your family’s personality.
Background and Props
Depending on the type of shoot we might incorporate background elements or props to add interest and depth to the photos.

Tips and Tricks
To make the most of your session, keep the following tips in mind:
Relax and Have Fun
Remember, this is a celebration of your family! Enjoy the experience, and don’t worry too much about posing or looking perfect.
Follow Directions
I’ll provide guidance on poses, expressions, and interactions. Follow my lead, and trust that I’ll help you look and feel your best.
Be Yourself
Authenticity is key in family photography. Don’t try to be someone you’re not or force a certain expression. Just be yourself, and the photos will reflect your genuine connection.

After the Session
Once we’ve wrapped up the session, I’ll book you in a viewing appointment. This is usually about a week later on a day that suits you. I’lll also give you a quick guide to our product range and show you some of our products.
Conclusion
Your family photography portrait session is a special opportunity to capture the love and connection within your family. We can’t wait to welcome you to the studio – see you soon!
