I don’t know about you, but every now and then theres a memory pops up on my phone. Quite often the memory is lovely, but the picture is really poor! Sometimes unflattering, but quite often just in the wrong light at the wrong time. Our phones are full of thousands of photographs. I’ve a desperate habit of saving screenshots and pictures of where I parked in Victoria Square amongst the myriad of family shots, making it nearly impossible to find anything! But no matter what, within that phone there are lovely memories of special moments throughout the years.
Below: What my phone photo app normally looks like: everything from metre readings to a damaged bumper!
Yet once in a while, you want something a bit special. Something that captures the story of your family in a timeless way – something that can hang on the wall for years to come, and even the odd time get passed down to the next generation. The light in your child’s eyes, the way your partner holds your hand, that special toy or connection with the family pet – you want something that doesn’t get lost in the digital abyss but is actually tangible and real.
I’m a photographer, so of course I’m going to argue for good portraiture! I see it as an investment in time, not just money. As the years go by and not everyone is still around, the portrait often goes from being quite expensive to priceless!
Last year my family had our portrait refreshed. The final result now hangs in the living room (shown above), the older photographs they replace now being the basis of a photo wall up the staircase. Friends and family often comment on them, and how the kids are so much more photogenic than their parents!!
So this year 2024, why not arrange a family portrait? You’ll enjoy the process (it can be surprisingly stress-free and fun!), and invest in some timeless pieces that will be in your family for many years to come.
